Council of Medical Research reported increased incidence of gallbladder carcinoma in the surviving population of the Bhopal gas tragedy that involved exposure of more than 500,000 people to methyl isocyanate gas. The severity of exposure, and increased multi-systemic morbidity in the survivors stimulated us to examine the molecular changes leading to gallbladder carcinoma. Surgically resected samples (N = 40) of gallbladder carcinoma were studied for the p53, Rad50, and cyclin-E expression by immunohistofluorescence bioimaging. Among the 40 samples, 23, 11, and 10 showed p53, Rad50, and cyclin-E expression, respectively, in moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas, VX-770 mouse demonstrating the prevalence and invasiveness of this disease in the methyl isocyanate-exposed population (P = 0.0009). Nevertheless, co-expression of Rad50, and cyclin-E with p53 was absent in adenomas with dysplasia, demonstrating their independent roles. We conclude that there was altered expression of p53, Rad50, and cyclin-E in the malignant transformation of gallbladder carcinoma in this methyl isocyanate gas-exposed cohort. “A meta-analysis was carried out in order to study the association of mycotoxins with performance and organ weights in growing pigs. A total of 85 articles published between 1968 and 2010 were used, totaling 1012 treatments and 13 196 animals. The meta-analysis followed three sequential analyses: graphical, correlation and variance-covariance. The presence of mycotoxins in diets was seen to reduce the feed intake by 18% and the weight gain in 21% compared with the control group. Deoxynivalenol and aflatoxins were the mycotoxins with the greatest impact on the feed intake and growth of pigs, reducing by 26% and 16% in the feed intake and by 26% and 22% in the weight gain. The mycotoxin concentration in diets and the animal age at challenge were the variables that more improved the coefficient of determination in equations for estimating the effect of mycotoxins on weight gain. The mycotoxin effect on growth proved to be greater in younger animals. The quantitative analysis of FCS curves supports that the gradual decrease of diffusion coefficient (D) associated with the conformational change of i-motif is not only due to the change in the intermolecular interaction between i-motif and solvent accompanied by the increase of pH but also due to the change of the shape of DNA.
