This consensus has vital clinical implications in the management of patients with fracture. Effect of anti-osteoporosis drugs on survival Hip fractures are associated with the highest degree of morbidity and mortality of all fractures with an associated 1-year mortality up to 15–25%. The HORIZON RFT was the first study in the literature to show a reduction in mortality when anti-osteoporosis drug therapy was commenced following a hip fracture. There was a 28% reduction in mortality in the active treatment group after a mean follow-up of 1.9 years [60]. The consolidation of a survival benefit from treatment of osteoporosis and the absence of a negative effect on fracture healing should further encourage early anti-osteoporosis drug treatment in patients with hip fracture. Exclusion of secondary causes for osteoporosis All patients with fracture should be carefully evaluated to exclude secondary osteoporosis.
