Fig. 2 shows representative body temperature curves of bees at low, medium and high ambient temperature (Ta). From these curves the mean value of each body part for each foraging stay was calculated and plotted in Fig. 3. It contains 3–45 measuring points per stay (including arrival and departure values) depending on the duration of foraging. We investigated the body temperature regulation of water foraging honeybees (Apis mellifera carnica) in the whole range of ambient temperatures (Ta = ∼3–40 °C) and solar radiation (50–1200 W m−2) they are likely to be exposed in their natural environment.
